Tax credit for energy star windows and doors

I got all new energy star windows and an exterior door. The credit states you can only enter the cost of materials, not installation. My question is how do you determine the actual costs of the materials without installation/labor? I have never seen or heard of a company spelling this out for you....the total cost always includes the installation cost. I am going to try calling, but not confident they will provide this info.

I'm sure many others have run into this...how did you handle?

Appreciate any help!

I am sure you can get that information from the company that installed them. These credits have been around for years, so I am surprised they didn't break that down for you on the original bill.

I have the same question about new windows. I just went through my paperwork and they gave me the Energy Star certificates, but no breakdown on materials vs. labor and installation.  I'll contact the company to see if they can give me a percentage or other information.

If the contractor cannot supply the cost of the windows, the information may be available on the internet by the manufacturer or other contractors.

In order to claim the credit on your tax return, it is your responsibility to determine the eligible cost. How you do that is up to you, but if you are audited, the IRS does not have to award any credit for which you do not provide sufficient proof.
