Survivor pay deduction

Filling out my Georgia return, there is a line for Survivor Pay Deduction. I receive DIC from the VA. It is non taxable and has never appeared on my taxes before. Is this what the Survivor Pay Deduction is asking for? DIC is not a one time payment.  It is not retirement income.  There are no 1099s involved.  The death happened years ago.  I am over 65.  Claiming DIC as survivor pay makes a significant impact to my Georgia tax [in my favor].  I tried online search and am finding nothing about GA and DIC on GA tax returns.  I am finding nothing on TurboTax that fully explains this deduction.  I don't see a form on TurboTax that would show where this deduction is on Georgia forms.

Specifically, what is Survivor Pay Deduction?

No, the DIC payment is not deducted on the Georgia tax return for Survivor Pay because it was not included as taxable income on the federal tax return.

The Survivor Pay Deduction is for Social Security, Pension or other payments made to you as survivor, not the primary recipient.

Survivor pay deduction

I believe you.  Please note TurboTax explanation of this deduction:

"Surviving family member of a deceased veteran who received income based on the service record of the veteran.

The income may be subtracted from Georgia taxable income."

This only references veterans and does not imply at all that it is for SSI or pensions.

Thanks for the fast response.

@onkoent I did find the specific reference, thank you for pointing it out because it is new this year.  It is for veteran's families, but it can only be subtracted if you included it as income on the federal return.

Income received by a surviving family member that is based on the service record of a deceased veteran without regard to the age of the surviving family member.  Georgia Code § 48-7-27 (2024)

Almost makes sense, as DIC has never been taxable so of course it is not included on federal return.  Thanks for clarifying as the TurboTax description fits DIC.  Guess that description should add "only if claimed as taxable income on federal return."
