We now live in the granny flat beyond our main house, which was given a different street address. We rent the main house to our son and others. We installed solar panels on the main house but they connects to both houses and all the electricity is counted. We payed utilities for both houses before and after the solar. If we say it was installed on the 'rental' house, do we get full credit?

No, the solar credit is not available for rental homes.
There is only one exception which is explained in this document .
Form 3468 does not apply in your situation.

Yes, it is. Form 3468 (which flows to Form 3800).
