are they the same thing?  I see a box for Real Estate taxes on my 1098 from my mortgage lender, is that the right number?

Yes, they are the same thing so the amount in the real estate taxes box on your Form 1098-E would be entered when you are asked for property taxes.

Deductible real estate taxes, also called property taxes, include taxes paid at closing when buying or selling a home, as well as certain taxes paid to your county or town’s tax assessor (either directly or through a mortgage escrow account) on the assessed value of your property.

Don't mix this up with PERSONAL property Taxes on your cars, trucks, boats motorcycles. This is a separate tax deductible item depending what state you live in.
