Why didn’t Turbo Tax ask for my personal property tax information (vehicles and home) when I did my taxes? This was the first time I did not submit that data?

As usual, I filed married/jointly, and took the standard deduction.

Did you already e-file without entering the information about your property tax, etc?    If you e-filed without entering all of your information, you will need to wait and see if the e-file is accepted or rejected.  If it is rejected, you can go back in and add the missing information.   If it is accepted, you will need to wait for the return to be fully processed in order to amend.

Itemized deductions have no effect at all on your federal refund or tax due unless you have enough itemized deductions to exceed your standard deduction, so it is unclear whether amending to add information will change any thing for you.

Your itemized deductions have to be more than your standard deduction before you will see a change in your tax owed or tax refund.  The deductions you enter do not necessarily count “dollar for dollar;” many of them are subject to meeting  tough thresholds—medical expenses, for example, must meet a threshold that is pretty hard to reach. (Only the amount that is MORE than 7.5% of your AGI counts)   The software program uses all the IRS rules that apply to the expenses you enter, and it tells you if you have enough to use your itemized deductions or if using the standard deduction is more advantageous for you.  Under the tax laws that have been in effect since 2018, some deductions have been capped—there is a $10,000 limit to the itemized deductions for state, local, property and sales taxes.

The standard deduction makes some of your income “tax free.”  It is not a refund.  You will see your standard or itemized deduction amount on line 12 of your 2024 Form 1040.

2024 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS

SINGLE $14,600    (65 or older/legally blind + $1950)

MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY            $14,600    (65 or older/legally blind + $1550)

MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $29,200    (65 or older/legally blind + $1550)

HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $21,900    (65 or older/legally blind + $1950)

Yes, I did. However, as I was going through the filing work, I was waiting for Turbo Tax to just ask me, but it didn't. I was ready to input the data, I had my personal property tax payments at hand. After completing the work, I wondered, then assumed, the program knew that that personal property tax information wasn't going to matter one way or the other, so it didn't bother. It would not have made a difference, I suppose? Well, I was very curious. I don't recall not putting that data in, in previous years. Thank you for the reply, by the way. I greatly appreciate it.

Only if that tax payment would make your Itemized Deductions more than the Standard Deduction would that payment make a difference on your return.
