TurboTax 2023 online is absolutely NOT accepting zeros or 9s for TIN/ FEIN box in 1099 form!!
Anybody found any solution on how to report foreign bank interest if you don't have TIN or FEIN
You do not need the EIN number. Enter your interest as a 1099-INT. The form only requires the name of the payer and the amount. Instructions are in that link. @sameerprabhu
TT online 2023 requires FEIN number and previously it accepted zeros if you had a foreign bank
But now it gives error in the review and doesn't allow eFile
1099-DIV requires an EIN - - but 1099-INT does not. Use the 1099-INT form...
Delete the 1099-DIV and use the 1099-INT from in TurboTax.
Thanks but I am using INT not DIV
2023 online version has FEIN field for both 1099 INT as well as DIV, and is enforcing entering a "valid" FEIN!!
Foreign bank doesn't have FEIN!
Enter it in Box 2 of a 1099-OID form. The next screen asks if you have a FEIN, say NO.
Thanks
Yes 1099 OID may be used for foreign bank interest as a workaround, i see I don't need add FEIN
But, it doesn't allow me to enter foreign tax paid in order to claim credit in 1116!
When you get the screen that gives you the option of entering your dividend income, there will be a small box to check off saying that my form has info in more than just these three boxes. Further down in Box 7, there will be an input to record the amount for the foreign taxes paid.
I have used 1's ie 11-1111111 for the last few years successfully, but haven't yet efiled for 2023. Turbo tax also showed as error in 2022 but the efile worked.
You may also try 99-9990000. This has worked for most.
okay so the 11-1111111 did NOT work this year. Read somewhere here to use 99-1111111 and that did allow me to efile in 2024.
I used 99-1111111 and it worked. All 1's did NOT work this year.
Confirming that prev user answer using FEIN 00-1111111 in 2024 worked 🙂 ! Note that 99-1111111 points in 2024 to some US organization.

Tried using 00-0000000, 99-9999999, 11-1111111, 00-1111111 all of those are resulting in smart check error.
