Entering my HSA Info made me owe instead of receiving a refund.

HSA information made me owe the feds $1180 after inputting the information. I was getting a refund. WTH? Is your system bugged? I'm tired of having issues that keep increasing year after year using your tax program. I'm going to someone else to do my taxes from now on.

Yes, if you don't complete the entire HSA section, you may see a penalty for over contributing to your HSA.

Here's how to complete the entire HSA section:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Select Deductions & Credits.
  3. Scroll down to Medical, select Start to the right of 1099-SA, HSA, MSA.
  4. Answer the questions according to your situation.
  5. You will be asked about the accounts you have, your 1099-SA, and your HDHP coverage.
  6. Keep going until you have answered all of the questions in the section.

Are you itemizing medical expenses on Schedule A?  If so, TurboTax automatically excludes from the amount on line 1 of Schedule A the medical expenses paid with the HSA because no deduction is permitted for expenses paid with the HSA, so make sure that when TurboTax asks you to enter your medical expenses that you include those paid with the HSA.
