Hello Community!
I plan to install all new energy efficient windows and possibly doors throughout my house this year. Are there any specific regulations to follow in order to receive these allotted deductions or credits? Thank you in advance!

The maximum credit for 2023 is 30% of the cost up to $600 for windows, $250 for one exterior door, and $500 for two or more doors. There is an overall maximum credit of $1200 per year. You may get a larger credit if you spread out the work over several years.
Only the cost of the doors or windows is eligible, not the cost of removal of the old or installation of the new. If audited, you may need to show the IRS an itemized bill showing the cost of the windows separate from installation. Ask your contractor for an itemized list.
Doors must meet Energy Star certification. Windows must meet the "most efficient" Energy Star certification (If there is more than one level for Energy Star windows, only the most efficient level qualifies).
When you go to sell the house, you can include the cost of the windows and doors as "improvements" for purposes of increasing your cost basis and reducing your capital gains. But you must reduce the cost basis by the value of the credits. For example, if your house cost $100,000 and you spent $5000 on windows, but got a $600 credit, your adjusted cost basis would be $104,400 and not $105,000.
Keep proof of the work and the cost with your other important tax papers for as long as you own the home plus 3 years after you sell.
