Changes to Taxes

I have always claimed my two children on my taxes and filed single, head of household. Now that I am married, should I file married jointly? Will I still be able to claim my children?

Changes to Taxes

Congratulations on being married!  It typically is best to file married filing jointly.  You are able to claim dependents on a married filing joint return, as long as you meet the requirements.

Here are the rules for a qualifying child.

You also may qualify for the Child Tax Credit.  There are also eligibility requirements and income limits.

You may be eligible for the full amount of the credit if you have an eligible child and your adjusted gross income is less than $150,000 a year.

  • If you have income above these amounts, the credit will be reduced by $50 for each $1,000 that your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) exceeds these thresholds.
