It depends, it is allowing me to add a 13 year on the online version and enter expenses as champ explained with a 13-Year-old DOB of 10/09/2009 it is allowing the credit, the box dropped down for me too. Eligible expenses up to 3,000 times credit percentage. Also, check the personal info section to make sure the DOB is entered correctly for your dependent. Your child and dependent care expenses must be for the care of one or more qualifying persons.
A qualifying person is:
Your qualifying child who is your dependent and who was under age 13 when the care was provided (but see Child of divorced or separated parents or parents living apart, later);
Your spouse who wasn't physically or mentally able to care for himself or herself and lived with you for more than half the year; or
A person who wasn't physically or mentally able to care for himself or herself, lived with you for more than half the year, and either:
Was your dependent, or
Would have been your dependent except that:
He or she received gross income of $4,400 or more,
He or she filed a joint return, or
You, or your spouse if filing jointly, could be claimed as a dependent on someone else's 2022 return.
Dependent defined.
A dependent is a person, other than you or your spouse, for whom you could claim an exemption. To be your dependent, a person must be your qualifying child (or your qualifying relative). However, the deductions for personal and dependency exemptions for tax years 2018 through 2025 are suspended, and, therefore, the amount of the deduction is zero. But, in determining whether you may claim a person as a qualifying relative for 2022, the person's gross income must be less than $4,400.
Qualifying child.
To be your qualifying child, a child must live with you for more than half the year and meet other requirements.
I did a test on my desktop program and reported a dependent child with a birthdate of 10-12-2009 and the child appeared in the drop down menu and the program gave me the credit. Did both parents have earned income ?
The child can be 13 at the end of the year but qualify for the credit if the care was before they turned 13.
Thanks but I couldn’t find specific that says the child has to be under 13 by end of 2022.
I was able to expense it when the service was provided while my daughter was still under 13 in 2022 which is line with what you shared below:
Your qualifying child who is your dependent and who was under age 13 when the care was provided…
could you please advise where exactly it says it has to be under 13 by 12/31/2022?
According to IRS, child under 13 including 13 is eligible. But my daughter turned to 14 later in 2022 so when I filed 2022 tax, I should still be able to include dependent care expense when she was under 13 in 2022. So the question is how TurboTax supports this partial year scenario?
You are correct that you can claim the credit if the care occurred when the child was still 12 years old even if they turned 13 later in the year.
