My parents sold MA residence mid May, and I moved to a VA apartment at start of June. I considered the MA residence my permanent residence, but I had a PA apartment for school and my parents got a MA apartment (I am not on their lease). I did a change of address for my mail with USPS to the MA apartment from the MA sold residence. Would earned bank interest during the time between MA and VA be for MA or PA? Do I just get to choose based on what I consider my permanent (2 week) residence?

A domicile is the place at which an individual maintains his/ her permanent abode and to which he/she intends to return whenever absent. A person may only have one domicile at any one time.
are you in college and got an apartment near campus? Are you a dependent of your parents ? The IRS would consider that VA residence to be temporary and your permanent residence remains MA all year.
I was a graduate student (24) and graduated in May, then got a job in VA start of June. While in college I had a PA apartment. So I think I will be MA at least until the residence in MA was sold, then starting in June I would be a permanent resident of VA, but I am not sure of the two week period between MA and VA. I do not think I can be claimed as a dependent since I was 24.
@anon42 sounds like you were a PA resident until you moved to VA. PA was your permanent residence while in grad school. If you were not a dependent on your parent's tax return, I do not see why MA comes into play.
that may make this easier.
I see, thank you for the replies. At first glance it seems like it might be easier if I were a MA resident since while going to school in PA I also worked there and had my residence as being in MA (this finished before selling the MA residence) so my W2 has tax withheld for MA. Is being a dependent necessary for considering the MA residence as my permanent residence? As far as documents like drivers license and things go that is where I lived. Then for the time between selling the MA residence and moving to VA I stayed in my parents MA apartment.
