American Opportunity Tax Credit

Hello,

I am not sure if I am eligible for the AOTC since I stopped going to school for 2 years and took 3 1/2 years to finish Community College, but I have only claimed the AOTC twice. I went back to school in 2019 to finish my bachelors and I am still considered a Junior at my university. Can I still claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit for 2019?

To be eligible for AOTC, the student must:

  • Be pursuing a degree or other recognized education credential
  • Be enrolled at least half time for at least one academic period* beginning in the tax year
  • Not have finished the first four years of higher education at the beginning of the tax year
  • Not have claimed the AOTC or the former Hope credit for more than four tax years
  • Not have a felony drug conviction at the end of the tax year

Assuming that you went to school at least half-time for one semester in 2019, then the answer looks like "yes".
