8915-f and 2021 Federal Disaster

The federal government declared parts of Texas a disaster area due to the Texas Ice Storms from Uri so you are eligible to claim a casualty loss. See Texas Severe Winter Storms for more information.

If you fall within the zone, you can claim a non-business casualty loss in TurboTax.

To claim a casualty loss in TurboTax:

  1. Type "casualty loss" in Search in the upper right
  2. Select "Jump to casualty loss"
  3. Follow the screens and enter your information

Generally, you may deduct casualty and theft losses relating to your home, household items, and vehicles on your federal income tax return if the loss is caused by a federally declared disaster or a significant fire.
