Property tax deduction

Property taxes paid in 2016 reduced my state tax liability but not my federal.  Why?

A property tax deduction only helps your federal return, if you have enough total expenses to benefit from itemizing deductions. Therefore, if you don't itemize deductions on your federal return, then you don't get to claim the property taxes. Please view the Turbo Tax FAQ below for more information about itemizing deductions.

You don't need to itemize deductions on your state return, in order to claim the property tax deduction.
