My wife only worked 4 months then cared four our child

My wife worked full time last year and we had no other dependents. How is my return less this year with a child and a wife that only worked 4 months? I've been taking care of them with one paycheck.

Probably because there was less total withholding than last year. Perhaps your wife had more withheld from her pay check each month last year than on your paycheck. With only 4 months of employment, means less withholding, less money to pay taxes with.
