I put in the amount I payed for state taxes it is asking for an ID number...the amount is on line 24 it maybe in the wrong place

I don't know what form you are referring to line 24 on, but if you paid state taxes either as an estimated tax payment or a balance due payment for a prior year, the software would not ask you for an ID number.  I am afraid you may be in the wrong location.  I checked line 24 of the 1040 (line says "total tax" for federal return), and of the Schedule A (line #s don't go that high).

Find your state state in the chart here and you should be able to make a tax payment there.   If you are asking about something else, comment back with some more details.
