I file my father as a dependent, however I live in Texas (no state taxes) and he lives in Arizona. Would he need to file state taxes for Arizona?

What type and amount of income does he have?  If his non-Social Security income is more than $4,300, he cannot be your dependent.

It depends on his gross income. In the state of Arizona, full-year resident or part-year resident individuals must file a tax return if they are:

  • Single, married filing separately or head of household and the Gross Income (GI) is at least $12,400;
  • Married and filing jointly and the GI is at least $24,800.
