On the Car & truck worksheet, how do i find the Special Depreciation Allowance and AMT Special Depreciation Allowance

I am trying to file my taxes, but I keep getting an error saying that I must fill in 36i (Special Depreciation Allowance) and 36j (AMT Special Depreciation Allowance) on Schedule C: Car & Truck Expense Worksheet. The car was put into service in 2015 and is still in use today. I'm using the actual expenses method (which I have from the beginning) and on last year's taxes (through Turbo Tax) the boxes for these 2 items were left blank.  BTW, I'm in Texas. Please, please let me know what to do to find out what should be entered there and if it is indeed supposed to be blank--how do I correct the error I'm getting from TurboTax? Help is GREATLY appreciated

If those lines were blank last year, your best option is to remove any amounts from those lines and leave them both blank. Alternatively, try entering a zero for both lines.

@PatriciaV If I leave it blank, I get the error during the Federal Check (even though they were blank in years past).  I'm afraid that something prior to that on the worksheet is creating the situation where it won't let me leave it blank...but I don't know what is causing it, so I don't know what to correct

It would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2024" file that is experiencing this issue.

 

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information.  If you would like to do this, please follow these instructions: 

 

In TurboTax Online, open your return, go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  5. You may wish to snap a screenshot to post instead of the actual number.
  6. Reply to this thread with your Token number (including the dash) and tag (@) the Expert requesting the token from you.
  7. Please include any States that are part of your return - this is VERY important.

If you are using TurboTax for Desktop, go to Online in the top menu, then choose "Send Tax File to Agent."

 

We will then be able to see the same experience you are having. If we are able to determine the cause, we'll reply here and provide you with a resolution.
