You can always force to claim the itemized deductions. However, it is not recommended. TurboTax will automatically calculate the highest and most convenient deduction available to you. If you go through the TurboTax questionnaire, it might ask you the amount range you have for certain expenses, if the software determines that adding those expenses wont give you a higher deduction, it wont populate for you to enter it manually.
You can always go back and still enter those expenses manually by following these steps:
- From the TurboTax home screen, Select Deductions and Credits
- Scroll down and click +Add tax brakes
- From the list of options locate the items you want to add. Click on Add (this will add it to your home screen list under deductions and credits).
- Go back to Deductions and credits and select the expenses you have chosen.
To force Itemized deductions:
- From your home screen, Select Deductions and Credits
- Locate Deduction Type, and click on the little pen to edit. This will allow you to change de deduction on the bottom by selecting Change my Deduction. It will also show the difference between the standard and itemized deductions calculated.
