How do I change to standard deduction for state in North Carolina while using itemized for federal?

You are able to force the North Carolina standard deduction (even if your itemized deductions are greater) in TurboTax Desktop. 

To force the state standard deduction, please follow the instructions below:

1. Open your North Carolina return.
2. Go to Forms in the top right of your screen.
3. On the left hand side, under North Carolina Individual, click on Info Worksheet.
4. Scroll until you get to NC Itemized Deductions or NC Standard Deduction.
5. Click on the box to claim NC Standard Deduction even if less than NC Itemized.
