Need Advice on filing tax returns

I came to the U.S. in August 2022 on an F1 visa and I’m currently on STEM OPT. My wife joined me in 2024, also on an F1 visa, and I’m paying her tuition fees. I’m trying to figure out if I can claim any tax deductions for paying her fees. Also, I’ve heard that F1 students are considered non-resident aliens for the first five years, so we can’t file jointly — is that true? Any guidance or insights would be really appreciated.

Yes, while you both are in the exemption period, you can't file Married Filing Jointly. You will need to file your separate 1040 NR returns. TurboTax doesn't handle these returns but our affiliate at Sprint Tax does.  Please contact them here for further information.

Thank you for the response. I really appreciate it. I was wondering if there’s any possibility of getting a tax exemption or benefit for the tuition fees I paid for my wife during the year 2024?

No. There is no educational credit that can be claimed either by you or your wife. See this IRS publication for further information.
