My spouse and I work overseas (State Department Foreign Service). We hired a local nanny (non-American) who doesn't have an SSN. Can we claim the Child & Dependent Care Credit?

Turbo Tax doesn't seem to include an option for our situation, which is admittedly a bit rare.  In order for both of us to work, we require this care for our infant daughter.  We already pay, by law, all the required local taxes, insurance, severance, etc. associated with hiring a full-time nanny--is it also required she have a U.S. social security number in order to claim the credit?  Thanks!

Yes you can claim the dependent care credit. In the section about the identiication number of care provider choose the option that she is a foreign entity. Turbotax will then enter "LAFCP" (Living Abroad Foreign Care Provider) in the box for the identification number

Thank you so much for your time in providing an answer!  Unfortunately the only option Turbotax gives is for me to enter either an SSN or EIN, with forced formatting and no pick lists.  According to the help button, if I'm unable to provide a SSN I have to input "See Page 2," in which case I must manually print, enter the details, and send via mail.  Perhaps this year the option you mention is not available in the software itself...?  In any event, I appreciate your information.

when you enter the info about the care provider, choose that it is a business. Then you can select that it's a foreign business.

It doesn't allow letters in that box!

Yes, you can claim the expenses paid to an individual or care provider while working in a foreign country.

For question "info about your care provider" select "Other"

Select the type of care provider:  choose Business or Individual

Select "Foreign Provider"

State: Foreign or US territory

You can leave the state and zip code in blank.
