In 2020, I paid a $2,575 Medicare Premium and also paid $2,525 for my Kaiser health plan.

What can I deduct on my individual (senior) federal tax return?

Health insurance premiums are deductible as a medical expense if you itemize and the total medical expenses are greater than 7.5 percent of your AGI.

You can deduct the amounts you paid for medical insurance on Schedule A of your Form 1040.   However, medical expenses are an itemized deduction and you can only include the amounts over 7.5% of your AGI.    If the total of all of your itemized deductions is not more than your standard deduction, you won't see any tax benefit on your tax return.  If your Medicare premiums were included on your SSA-1099 that you entered into TurboTax, these amounts have already been transferred to your Schedule A.   To enter other medical insurance premiums (or any other medical expenses):

  • With your return open, search for Schedule A and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
  • Answer Yes on the Did you spend more than $3,000 on medical expenses in 2020? screen.
  • Enter your medical expenses, starting with prescriptions, on the following screens.  Each category (including premiums) has its own entry.
