Medical travel expenses

We take our 2 year old to several pediatric doctors that are a 3 hour drive one way. We normally stay at least one night in a hotel and get a medical rate. We do this several times in the year. Is there anything we should be deducting for this and what proof do we need?

You can deduct your travel expenses, your lodging as well as your doctor fees. See below for details. As to proof, while you don't need to submit it with your tax return, you should keep your log of miles and your payment receipts (credit card, bank statements) with your records.

You can include lodging for a person traveling with the person receiving the medical care. For example, if a parent is traveling with a sick child, up to $100 per night can be included as a medical expense for lodging. Meals aren't included.

You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay for transportation to another city if the trip is primarily for, and essential, to receiving medical services. They include:

  • Bus, taxi, train or plane fares and ambulance service,
  • Transportation expenses of a parent who must go with a child who needs medical care,
  • Transportation expenses of a nurse or other person who can give injections, medication, or other treatment required by a patient who is traveling,
  • Transportation expenses for regular visits to see a mentally ill dependent , if these visits are recommended as part of treatment.
