Medical Deductions

I and my wife are moving into The Fairfax, a Continuing Care Retirement Community in March. As part of this process, we paid a portion of our Nonrefundable potion of our Entrance Fee in November with the rest due at the closing of our house next month. The Fairfax has stated that a percentage of that entrance fee (30.4%)  may be applied as a medical expence along with other qualified expenses on our 2023 tax return. Do you have an opinion on this advice?

Medical Deductions

The IRS says in this document that:

in certain instances nursing home expenses are deductible medical expenses.

If your Retirement Community has determined that 30.4% of the entrance can be deducted as Medical expenses, they must have calculated that this portion represents the cost of actual medical care.  My advice is to follow their recommendation and deduct 30.4% of the fee as Medical expenses.
