Medical Deduction

Will claiming a medical deduction increase my state tax refund even if it does not change my federal refund?

we have enough medical bills & premiums to meet the amount for a medical deduction. However we are capped out on our federal claims at $10,000 mostly just from our mortgage. It does not increase our federal return to claim it.

will claiming the medical help our state return in Ohio

Medical Deduction

Yes, claiming medial expenses on your Ohio return will reduce your taxable income.

Medical Deduction

Medical care expenses are generally deductible for Ohio income tax purposes to the extent they exceed 7.5% of the taxpayer’s federal adjusted gross income.   This is the same requirement as for Federal.   Enter them in Federal > Deductions and Credits > Medical so that they transfer over to state.
