I'll start by saying that Social Security Administration leaves a lot to be desired as far as providing information. We had a baby last year, got the birth certificate and social security card in the mail. Both my wife and I thought the other one put them into our safe. Well it's tax time and it looks like neither of us did and we can't find the card.
Since it's the first year to claim our baby, the SSN isn't saved in our TurboTax information. Here's where the problem comes, the SSN site assumes you know the SSN. Then it says when you go to an office for help, that a birth certificate is not enough information for a baby. But it doesn't say what you need.
I'm about to go on hold yet again since I ran out of time the other day, but I'm hopefully that either someone has better Google-Fu then me or has dealt with this and knows what proof I need to bring.
I told my wife that I'm tempted to just bring the baby and say "here's the baby", but given it's a government entity I'm dealing with, I suspect they won't see the humor.
