It appears it is taxable on the Federal return, but not the state return. However, neither TurboTax nor outside sources give any clarity as to where it should go. Can anyone at Intuit help?
This is all correct. I also cannot find where to enter the "Maine COVID disaster relief payment" ($285) on my federal form. Is the state sending out some kind of 1099?
If they are sending out 1099s, they will have them sent by the end of the month. If they do not send one out and you need to report it, use the Other Reportable Income section which is within the Miscellaneous Income section which is within the Less Common Income section in TurboTax. You will be able to deduct this amount on your Maine state return if added to your federal return.
Generally, disaster-related payments are not subject to Maine individual income tax, though exceptions do apply. The payment may be subject to federal income tax. To the extent the Disaster Relief Payment is taxable by the Internal Revenue Service and included in your 2021 federal adjusted gross income, you will be able to subtract the amount on your 2021 Maine individual income tax return.
