So, I have an office that is 20 miles from my house. I go to the office maybe once a week. So, I know that on those days, when I go straight from home to work and then back home, those are commuter miles to and from, 40 miles of personal usage.
The other days I go straight to temporary job sites and never go to my office. Some temporary job sites are actively being worked on and others are potential future job sites. On most of these days I do not go to the "office" at all. Let's say on one of these days that I do not go to the office at all and I'm going to and from these temporary job sites, I drive 300 miles. Are all 300 miles work miles? or do I have to make 40 of them commuter miles since that is what my commuter miles would have been if I had gone to and from the office? So, are all 300 work miles? or are 260 work miles and 40 commuter miles?
Another scenario that I run into a lot is the next one. I go from home to a temporary job site #1, 30 miles away, then I go to the office (15 miles from job site #1). Then I leave the office and go to a different temporary job site #2 (50 miles from office), then at the end of the day, I drive from job site #2 to my home which is 25 miles away.
So, I drove 120 miles in this day but, I never commuted straight from home to the office or from the office to home. Are all 120 miles work miles? If not, how should they be broken out between personal and work?
