I did consultant work September and October 2016. I had to purchase a laptop for this. Don't know where to claim the expense? Is a laptop expense a startup cost or office supply?

You will need to enter your laptop, under Business Assets. There is where you would enter the purchase information for your laptop.

In TurboTax, please do the following:

  • Business
  • Business Income and Expenses
  • You will prompted to answer general questions related to your business.
  • Your Business page
  • Business Assets, then Click Start.

You will need to enter your laptop, under Business Assets. There is where you would enter the purchase information for your laptop.

In TurboTax, please do the following:

  • Business
  • Business Income and Expenses
  • You will prompted to answer general questions related to your business.
  • Your Business page
  • Business Assets, then Click Start.

THIS IS NOT CORRECT. NO WHERE DOES IT SHOW UP TO ENTER THE INFORMATION.

• Click Business, then Continue
• How do you want to enter your business income?, then I'll choose what I work on
• Business Income and Expenses, click Start/Update
• Did you have any income and expenses for a business in 2016?, click Yes
• First, let's confirm your business name and address, click Continue
• Enter Business Information, click Continue
• Tell us about your business, click Continue
• Enter Employer ID Number, If Any, click Continue
• Do you use the cash method of accounting to run your business?, click Continue
• Did you make any payments that required you to issue a form 1099?, click Continue
• Do any of these uncommon situations apply to your business?, click Continue
• Let's confirm your business info, click Continue
• Your Business page

Then Business Assets, click Start
Any Large Purchases (Depreciable Assets)?,click Yes
Did you buy any items for any business, rental property and/or farm that cost $2,500 or less in 2016?, click No
Describe This Asset, choose Computer, Video, Photo and Telephone Equipment, click Continue
