How to file on 2016 taxes and how to add car registration fees to 2017 taxes?

If you didn't file your taxes in 2016, you will need to purchase the TurboTax Desktop software to get started as these returns can no longer be filed online. Once your return is complete you will need to print and mail it to the IRS for processing. Please see these instructions to get started: https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3301770

If you have not filed your 2017 return, you can add your car registration fees using the instructions below. If you have already filed your return, you would need to wait until the IRS either accepts or rejects your return and then you can amend the return to add this information. Please note if you do not itemize deductions it will not be beneficial to amend to add this information.

To enter this information, select "Federal" on the left menu bar then select "Deductions and Credits" on the top middle part of the screen.

  • Scroll down to the "Cars and Other Things You Own" section and click "Show More" (if this is not visible, click "Check for more tax breaks" to open the section for additional deductions).

  • You can then click "Start" next to "Car Registration Fees" to enter this information.
