If that is the case, then sign the return as “personal representative.”

If you have been appointed personal representative AND there is a surviving spouse (filing a joint return), the spouse must also sign.

If you ARE the surviving spouse filing a joint return and no personal representative has been appointed, write “filing as surviving spouse” where you would ordinarily sign the return.
