Here’s what you can do — step by step:
Don’t file the amended return yet. If you haven’t submitted it, you can go back to your main (original) tax return.
Log in to your tax software (like TurboTax, H&R Block, etc.) and open your original return, not the amended one.
Look for an option like “Amend (1040-X)” or “Switch to Original Return” — most platforms let you discard the amendment and return to your initial version.
If your 1098 form was deleted inside the amended return, you can simply re-enter it manually:
Go to the Deductions & Credits section.
Choose Mortgage Interest (Form 1098) and re-add the info from your lender.
If you already filed the amended return without the 1098, you’ll need to file another amendment to re-add the form.
✅ Tip: You can also download a copy of Form 1098 directly from your lender’s online portal or contact them to reissue it — they’re required to provide a duplicate on request.
