To clarify, did you have any self-employment income that you reported?

I had no self-employment income. Only the part time which I was paid through QuickBooks and automatically had those taxes paid from.

So on your W2, in box 2, is there an amount there?  

You have taxes taken out of your paycheck for three reasons - to pay your taxes, to pay in to social security and to pay into medicare.

Social security and medicare are a system we all pay in to.  You receive that back when you reach 65 or so.

You see the amounts taken out for those in boxes 4 and 6.  They don't help your tax refund.

The amount in box 2 helps your tax refund.  Especially if - as in your case - you don't owe any taxes.  You get all of that amount in box 2 back.

However, if box 2 is zero then the refund is zero.
