You will file as single. You would report your HSA contributions on your tax return.  HSA contributions made by you and your employer are in box 12 of your W-2 with the code W.

When you enter this in TurboTax via your Form W-2 you will be prompted to answer follow-up questions about your HSA. This information will be used to complete Form 8889.

Form 8889: is a  form that TurboTax will generate for you if you contributed to, or spent money from your HSA.

TurboTax will determine if you have any excess contributions to your HSA based on your answers to the follow-up questions.

If you have overfunded your HSA you will need to withdraw the excess amount by April 15, 2025 to avoid a penalty (this will be October 15 if you filed an extension for your tax return).

The limits are as below for 2024. The limit is $8300 if you are under age 55 at the end of 2024 and you are covered by a family HDHP.

For 2024, your maximum combined total that you, your employer, can contribute to your HSA account is as follows:

  • $4,150 if you're under 55 at the end of 2024 and are covered by an individual (self-only) HDHP;
  • $8,300 if you're under 55 at the end of 2024 and are covered by a family HDHP;
  • $5,150 if you're 55 or older at the end of 2024 and are covered by an individual (self-only) HDHP;
  • $9,300 if you're 55 or older at the end of 2024 and are covered by a family HDHP.

To get to the HSA questions in your TurboTax program, you can click on "Search" (or in TurboTax Online it is a magnifying glass) and then type "hsa" in the search box.  Then click on "Jump to hsa".

It will look something like this:
