I know I can deduct a portion of utilities and mortgage interest for a home office. What about repairs or additions to the home such as landscaping, furniture?

A US Tax Court has allowed landscaping costs as part of the home-office deduction in limited cases where the taxpayer used his home as his sole office and his clients regularly came to his home to conduct business. If that's your situation, you may claim landscaping as part of your deduction. Otherwise, it's not advisable.

however, there are many courts where tax matters can be brought.  and they don't always agree

With this number of courts involved in making legal determinations on federal tax matters including all 13 United States Courts of Appeals exercising appellate jurisdiction (the 11 numbered Circuits, the Federal Circuit (for appeals from the U.S. Court of Federal Claims), and the D.C. Circuit), some observers express concern that the tax laws can be interpreted differently for like cases. Thus arises the movement on the part of some for a U.S. Court of Federal Tax Appeals, though the merits of this are a matter of much discussion

furniture if it's for the HO would be deductible or depreciable. you can deduct 100% of the cost of repairs you make just to your HO. general repairs to the home would get a pro-rata deduction like utilities, taxes and mortgage interest.
