if you get a w-2 you are not entitled to any home office deduction.
According to TurboTax, it directed me this way because I have a home office "for my company's convenience". I interpreted that to mean that because my company doesn't provide an office and I'm expected to work remotely, I would qualify. Is this not correct?
No, you won’t qualify for a home office deduction on your federal tax return as an employee. For tax year 2018 and beyond, unreimbursed employee business expenses and home office deductions are no longer available on your federal tax return unless you fall under certain Categories of Employment. The TurboTax interview screens asks the questions regarding a home office for your company’s convenience because several states still give deductions for unreimbursed employee business expenses.
Please review the TurboTax Help articles Can employees deduct any job-related expenses? and Where do I enter job-related employee expenses? (Form 2106) for additional information and instructions.
