Yes, it is $2000 per child. It sounds like you may have received the Child Tax Credit for 2 of the children and one child is listed as an ''Other Dependent'' which is only a $500 credit. Once the child turns 17, the credit lowers from $2K to $500.
Review the birthdates and other data entered for your dependent children. If a child was born in 2024, make sure to indicate the child lived with you ALL YEAR, even if the child was born in December. See below for items to double-check in TurboTax.
To qualify, your child must meet all of these requirements:
- Be under age 17 at the end of the tax year
- Is your child, stepchild, foster child, adopted child, sibling, step sibling, half sibling, or a descendant of any of them (for example, a grandchild, niece, or nephew)
- Has their own Social Security number
- Lived with you for more than half the year
- Didn't support themselves (didn't pay more than half their own expenses)
- Is a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien
- Residents of Canada or Mexico don't qualify
