I am currently trying to file the foreign tax credit with passive income. I do not have to file form 1116. The software at the “interview” stage recognizes this.

during the federal review. The online software is not recognizing that form 1116 is not required. Instead it is asking me to attach form 1116 or take a deduction. Can we please get this fixed or is there a work around? The foreign tax is from a form 1099-DIV, and I have attached 2 screenshots. 1)has the last screen of the foreign tax credit form which does not ask me any other questions 2) is the error message I am getting during the final review.

There are several postings regarding that issue and appears to be a flaw for TY2018.  Try the following work around.

Bring up the 1099-DIV and  in Box 7, double click on that f1116 icon. Another box will appear.  You will see the phrase "Form 1116 (COPY 1). Click on that and it will be highlighted. Then click on the "Link" button. That box will disappear and you should see the phrase "COPY 1" inside the f1116 icon in the 1099-DIV, box 7.

Then recheck line 48 of the 1040 to make sure you still have the credit. If so, that should remove the error.

Is your credit displayed on line 48 of the 1040?

rogge1722, I had the same problem yesterday and the workaround that you described above worked for me.  I was going to detail it here, but you beat me to it.  FYI, I am using TurboTax Premier Desktop version.

You have the online version which I am not familiar with. You should have a working version of the 1099-DIV and it is the one on the screen shot with Box 7 expanded with a thru d

Hmm I tried searching for it and it keeps sending me back to that screen. Any ideas?

Bring up the screen shot headed by "check this entry."  See if using that will work.

No it is not letting me do anything on that screen except make it "deductible" and not take the credit. Maybe I am cursed?

Try looking for a "Form 1099-DIV worksheet" on the method you use to bring up forms.

I was able to get it to work and override with turbotax supports help. We had to do force it to fill it out form 1116.

I double clicked the line to link Form 1116 at filing because it would not let me file without it, and it said copy 1 attached and let me file, but copy 1 is not attached when I search the all forms version of my pdf.  I was able to file though.
