I am an international student with F1 visa. Unfortunately, I used Turbotax and I received tax refund now. But I am informed that I must use Sprintax. What can I do now?

As a F-1 visa holder, you are considered as an 'exempt' individual, meaning not counting days when you reside in the United States.  You should be filing a form 1040NR.  For the TurboTax program, it does not support nonresident 1040NR and assumes every filer is a resident so there are no questions related to your immigration status being asked in the program. Since you have already filed the 2015 tax return, you are suggested to use our affiliated partner, Sprintax to complete your nonresident form and also amend the original return.

Please follow the instructions below how to amend :

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf - page 5 under Residents and Nonresidents.

-Enter your name, current address, and social security number

(SSN) or IRS individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) on

the front of Form 1040X.  ( You will enter APPLIED under your spouse's id)

- Do not enter any other information on page 1. Also, do not

complete Parts I or II on page 2 of Form 1040X.

- Enter in Part III the reason why you are filing Form 1040X.

- Complete a new or corrected return (Form 1040, Form

  1040NR, etc.).

- Across the top of the new or corrected return, write

  “Amended.”

- Attach the new or corrected return to the back of Form 1040X

2017 Tax return
Hello I’ve been an F1 student from Canada from 2012-2018, living in California. Do I need to file form 1040 NR and Form 8843 Correct?
Also, Do I need to file form 540 NR for CA?

2018 Tax return:
Started my OPT in June 2018.
Since now I am a resident do I only file form 1040 for federal and Form 540 for state?

You can determine your resident status on 1040nra.com

2018 Tax return, how do I send Form 1040X to the IRS. If I have already received the tax return, how do I send it back?

"TurboTax does not file for international people/NRAs" is not a true statement.

Foreign and international tax questions are fairly complex.  As the definition of a nonresident is different between Immigration and Tax World (IRS), a nonresident visa holder, for example, F or J visa can still qualify to file a Form 1040 if they stay within the US for a certain period of time.  Due to its complexity, it's the taxpayer's responsibility to decide if they are qualified to file as a US resident for tax purposes.

I have addressed your concern and thank you for your feedback.
