I am working on TurboTax 2020 Home & Business Desktop for Mac. After completing my Federal return, I attempted to, but when selecting to download the Calif. State product. One person reported being able to download their State software by: Quitting TT, opening, then completing the TT Review process. They then were able to D’load their state S’ware.
I entered Review in my TT2020 program. It showed one error. “Check This Entry Form 4952 Worksheet: Line 3-a must be entered.”
Strangely, the correct amount (44,585) was already present on line 3 of the FORM 4952, but I followed TT direction and put that 44,585 amount in the single box in this Review/error correction process. It reported all was great and correct.
But when I printed the IRS version to be mailed in, Form 4952 now showed:
Line 1 44,585 (this line is supposed to be empty!)
Line 2 44,585 Same amount it had before the TT ‘fix’
Line 3 89,170 This should be 44,585
I have read never to make corrections or additions in the TT ‘FORMS Mode’.
1)But I cannot find where to go in the Step-by-Step TT software to try to correct this problem.
2)I had printed a copy to keep for my self before making the TT required line 3-a entry. That form 4952 was correct, showing:
Line 1 blank (this line is supposed to be empty!)
Line 2 44,585 Same amount it had before the TT ‘fix’
Line 3 44585 44,585 is the correct line 3 value
3)Is there another way to get a download of Calif. State 2020 TT? I am still getting the same failure message trying to D’Load the Calif. State product: “Hmmn… it looks like we hit a snag. Please try again or check back in a bit.”
No go several tries in a row. An hour later, still no go and with multiple re-tries in a row.
A)I could use the path to find the path to the Step-by-Step location to make corrections.
B)What did I do wrong entering the 44,585 amount, which is the amount on line 7 of my 2019 Form 4952, to the TT review (which said it was going to a line 3-a on the 4952 W’sheet?
C)How can I download my Calif. State TT product?
Thanks in advance for any help.
*A bonus question… Anyone ever hear of someone getting a federal refund filing 6 months after the 3 year time limit? ;o). Everything I read says a definite, no, that a past due refund is history.

Merry Christmas Eve,
I was hoping to finish 2020 Fed and State yesterday, so I could upload the 2020 .tax file to my Turbotax 2021 H. & Bus. Desktop so I could continue on it, then '22 and '23. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I still cannot Locate where in TT 2020 Home & Business Desktop for Mac that I originally made entries in the TT step-by-step process that that filled in the Disallowed Investment Interest amount of $44,585.
1) What is the path to that.
2) I still get "We've Run Into a Snag. Try later" failure every time I get to the place where I click Yes to download the "California product". Is there a fix for this problem, or a workaround so I can get the State return to fill out?
I just now noticed, viewing in Forms Mode, that the 2020 AMT 4952 has $44,585 entered in line
•(1)'s Inv. Int. Exp. Paid or accrued in 2020 shows $44,585 (should be zero), while Line (2) for Disallowed for 2019 is blank (should be $44,585).
• And the TT 2020 Forms Modes for form 4952 shows 44,585 in both line (1) & line (2).
How do I change that (FIND THAT) in the step by step mode? Is it correct that I should NOT make any revisions to the forms in the 'Forms Mode'?
The above of course fills in the errant 44,585 in line (1) that I need to figure out how to remove. And hopefully, doing so in a way that TT sees it as proper and doesn't generate an 'error' in Review.
Merry Christmas Eve. Don’t know about your amount problem but for the state program you can’t download state anymore. They only support the last3 years and discontinued 2020 when 2024 came out in November. You could have downloaded state before then. And I’m surprised you got 2020 to activate and run at all.
You might have to fix form 4952 by making overrides on the actual form since you have to print and mail it anyway. Ignore any error messages at the end since you can’t efile.
@VolvoGirl , thank you very much for the response!
I had downloaded TT 2020 long ago. I just never tried to download the State product until now. Thanks for letting me know it is blocked due to age. I guess I'll try calling TT cust. service to see if they are willing to send me a link to 2020 Calif. State.
Do you know if I were to remove the 44,585 amounts that TT currently has entered as 2020 amounts, which should be Zero in the 'Forms Mode', that would: 1) create a TT s'ware glitch not allowing me to print my 2020 return to mail in? 2) Mess up behind the scenes calculations that would change/corrupt other parts of my return?
I guess I could try deleting that form 4952 Line (1) 2020 errant entry in the 4952 Worksheet first, and see if that passes through to the 4952 form. Then, if not, delete it from the 4952 form itself. Then see if I am able to print it. -OR- would this open a new can of worms of problems? I really don't care if TT 'thinks' there is an error, when I know it is correct by viewing the forms to be sent t the IRS, as long as I am able to print the final.
A Very Merry Christmas VolvoGirl 🎄
