If you need to include a qualified appraisal or a signed declaration, you will have to print and mail your return.

Gotcha. Pretty easy to do?

Do all the math etc in turbotax and then print and just slip that in...?

Sorry, it's a bit alien to me. Appreciate the help.

Yes, just complete the entire return and replace that one form after you print out the return.

WRONG! you can still e-file your return. but then you have to submit the appraisal with form 8453

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8453.pdf

follow the 8453's filinginstructions.

I am not sure why that is "WRONG!" since it is every bit as easy and straightforward to print and mail the entire return as it is to e-file and then print and mail only those two forms.

If a taxpayer e-files and then prints and mails, the taxpayer has to keep track of both submissions (and there are time constraints when filing a printed 8453 with an attached form after e-filing a 1040).
