How do I claim my child tax credit increase if I already filed my 2023 taxes

There is no child tax credit increase for you to claim; if you received the child tax credit when you filed your 2023 tax return, the amount you could receive was automatically added to line 28 of your Form 1040.   There was a bill proposed to Congress to change the child tax credit ---but that bill did not pass.  Do not expect more child tax credit and do not expect monthly child tax credit payments.

ENHANCED CHILD TAX CREDIT BILL

There are currently a number of websites incorrectly saying that there will be advance child tax credit payments being issued in July 2024.  Sorry—-this is untrue.   There was a bill in Congress to enhance the child tax credit.  It has not passed.  The bill was voted down in the Senate on 8-1-2024,

There are no monthly advance child tax credit payments for 2024.   In tax year 2021 ONLY there were advance CTC payments sent from July 2021 to December 2021.  There were no such payments in 2022, 2023, and no such payments being sent for 2024.

As of now, the child tax credit for 2023 is still $2000, with a refundable “additional child tax credit “ amount of up to $1600.

If you are eligible to receive the child tax credit for 2023, it is added to your 2023 Form 1040 automatically after you enter your dependent child(ren) who are under the age of 17 and after you enter the income you earned from working.   The amount that is "refundable" is on line 28.

Look at your 2023 Form 1040 to see the child-related credits you received
