Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

Hello, I live in VA. 1) Where do I input information for my personal property tax bill (Cars) and 2) the amount of money contributed to a 529 plan?

I seem to remember entering both information in previous years, not sure if laws have changed or if I am missing something.

Personal property tax on cars is entered on the federal Schedule A as an itemized deduction.

To enter these expenses in TurboTax, please follow these steps:

  1. Click on Federal Taxes > Deductions & Credits
  2. Scroll to the Cars and Other Things You Own section and click on the Start/Update box next to Personal Property Taxes.

If you take the standard deduction instead of itemizing you will not receive a benefit from the entry

Contributions to state 529 plans are not deductible on the federal return.  However, they are deductible on your VA return.  Virginia allows a deduction for contributions to four 529 College Savings Plans:

  • Virginia Prepaid Education Program (VPEP)
  • Virginia Education Savings Trust (VEST)
  • CollegeAmerica (only through financial advisers)
  • CollegeWealth (only through certain banks)

To enter these contributions in your VA return, please follow these steps:

  1. If you've already entered information in your VA return, when you go back into your VA return you will see a screen, Your 2015 Virginia taxes are ready for us to check.  Click on the Edit box next to Income[See Screenshot #1, below.]
  2. On the screen, Here's the income that Virginia handles differently,  in the Education section click on the Start/Revisit box next to Virginia College Savings Prepaid Tuition [Section 529) Plan. [Screenshot #2]
  3. On the next screen, Have You Ever Had a 529 College Savings or Prepaid Tuition Plan? mark the button
Yes, I've had one of these 529 plans and click Continue
  4. On Tell Us About your Virginia 529 College Savings or Prepaid Tuition Plan mark the box I made a payment or contribution in 2015  [Screenshot #3]
  5. The next screen prompts you to Enter Your Account Info and Activity.  Enter the requested information and click Continue[Screenshot #4]
  6. You will then be taken to Your College 529 Plan Payments and Contributions Summary.  If you want to enter contributions to another 529 account, click on the Add Another Account link.  If not, click Done
