If you aren't required to complete Form 8812, delete the form:

  • If you're using TurboTax Online software and need to delete a form, click here.
  • If you're using TurboTax CD\Download software and need to delete a form, click here.

Sorry, I don't understand this answer. The link to delete a form from a download first asks me to sign in. Why? I am using a download. Secondly it says deleting a form is not a good idea. Thirdly, on a Mac, I see no way to do so. There must be a more appropriate answer for this, especially for Mac users.

This error has been there since the release. In error check it says I need to input advance child credit payments on schedule 8812 in section letter 6419 smart worksheet. I have no child I have no payment. If I put a zero in the box and run error check again it says I can't enter anything in that box!

Here is a TurboTax help article that has instructions to delete a form on a MAC.

I have this same error.  I did not address any childcare credit items either.  I deleted form 8812 but when I reran the Federal Review, Turbotax comes up with the same error.  The error is asking for B1 and B2 to be filled in on the Principal Place of Abode and Letter 6419 Information Smart Worksheet.

How do I correct this error?

@SkyQueen

If you have deleted Federal form 8812 yet the question regenerates under Federal Review, there is something entered in the software to reconstruct it.

Can you find Principal Place of Abode and Letter 6419 Information Smart Worksheet under Tax Tools / Tools / Delete a form?

Has anything been entered under Federal / Deductions & Credits / You and Your Family / Advance payments, Child and Other Dependent Tax Credits?

Hello, thanks for the reply. I suspect your info is for a PC - I have a Mac so I do not have the sequence of links you suggest. I did find the Pinciple place of abode smart worksheet and this is the source of the error. It shows in yellow under B1. It wants me to enter something. When I enter a zero error check tells me I am not supposed to enter anything in that place. I have double checked all other forms re personal information and no box is checked suggesting I am anything but single with no dependents. Thanks

Nothing was entered under Federal / Deductions & Credits / You and Your Family / Advance payments, Child and Other Dependent Tax Credits.

(This answer was in another post but not sure if I can't post the link)That was apparently the problem although I still don't understand why everyone has to fill this out.  That's like saying everyone has to fill out they have $0 for 1099-R's

Principal Place of Abode and Letter 6419 Information Smart Worksheet is what pops up in the error.  I tried deleting Form 8812 but it kept regenerating.  I did not go to Tax Tools / Tools / Delete a form

I found a very good answer here.  Apparently I am not the only one that doesn't understand why this has to be filled out.

Thank you - when the form is removed it just reappears. There is no entry to suggest I am anything but single with no dependents. The work around that suggests entering a zero and then not running error check again puts schedule 8812 in my forms to be filed - which will surely draw a flag with IRS so don’t care for that workaround. I respectfully suggest that this may not be user error.

You have to go through the Child Tax Credit section and answer the questions - basically, you need to tell TurboTax that you did not receive any advance payments.   Once you click through the screens in that section, the Form 8812 will go away permanently.

To get back to this section to review it, search for Child Tax Credit and use the Jump to Child Tax Credit link to be taken to those questions and go through carefully making sure to indicate that you nor your spouse received any advance payments.

Everyone has to go through that section before filing this year - even if you have no kids....

Since so many people are having this issue is there a plan to fix the software?    What's crazy is that I get this message & I do not have any dependents!  I deleting the form will be a very temporary fix.

TurboTax is required to ask this question of all taxpayers, even if they do not have dependents in order to comply with IRS guidelines.  There are numerous situations where a taxpayer may have received payments but will not have dependents listed on their tax return (such as when parents alternate years claiming children.)

@tomq7

Did you receive Advance Child Tax Credit payments and/or an IRS Letter 6419?  Please clarify.

If so, the TurboTax software is asking that you disclose whether there is a dependent qualifying child to offset the Advance Child Tax Credit payments?

See IRS Schedule 8812

No, we did not receive the Child Care Payment as our children are in their forties and do not live with us.  We did receive a $2800 Stimulus Payment
