Filing for 2022 but..

Sorry if it is in the wrong area.

I am in the process of using turbo tax to file my 2021 taxes but I over paid for my unemployment insurance for 2020... I have the corrected adjustment tax document from the DOL. How would I do ... input that?

Can you please clarify your question?

You were overpaid unemployment benefits for 2020? Or you overpaid taxes on unemployment benefits received in 2020?

Did you file your 2020 return?

I got 15k in unemployment but had to pay back 4200. The DOL sent a form that shows i got 4200 credit.

If you received unemployment benefits in 2020 and paid a portion back in 2021, you qualify for a claim of right repayment.

A claim of right repayment occurs when a taxpayer is required to repay income that they had reported and paid tax on in a previous tax year. The repayment must be of funds that, when received, the taxpayer had a reasonable belief he or she had unrestricted access to.

If you have an amount of $3,000 or less, follow these steps.

  • Go to Federal / Deductions & Credits / Your tax breaks / Other Deductions and Credits / Other Deductible Expenses.
  • Click Start / Revisit to the right.
  • At the screen Did you have any of these less common expenses? select Repayments of $3,000 or less.

If you have an amount of $3,000 or more, your repayment will qualify for a credit.  You will need to use TurboTax Desktop and transfer your online data to the desktop program first.  KristinaK here has an excellent point by point description of using TurboTax Desktop to compute a credit for a repayment greater than $3,000.

So to amend my 1040 tax return, i would be amending it for 2020? I can't just add the credits to my 2021 tax return?

If i need to amend how would i do that with the online software... for 2020/2021?

You need to amend your 2020 tax return to determine the amount of credit to put on your 2021 return. You will see an option to amend your tax return when you log into your TurboTax program, on your Tax Home page where you will see it under Your tax returns and documents.

You need to change your unemployment income to the correct amount to see how your tax refund or amount due changes. The change will be the amount of your credit on your 2021 tax return. When you determine the amount, don't file your amended return, you can cancel the amendment if you want. There will be an option for that on the left menu bar.
