Excess social security and Medicare claim

Hello,

I work for multiple w-2 employers and hence turbo tax is showing that I am eligible for social security and Medicare tax refund as I overpaid them. It is correctly calculating the refund on the paper form but is not subtracting from the total amount I owe. Should I file it and will IRS automatically correct it or issue me refund ?

The excess should be calculating on sch 3, line 11. It becomes a part of the line 15 total that is carried to 1040 line 31. Then it becomes part of the total on line 32. Line 32 is added to the other tax payments you made, w2, et to create your total payments on line 33. That total is subtracted from your tax liability on line 24. The program is flowing correctly. Where is the process breaking down in your return?

I see that you are using the online version, try these steps if you are not seeing it flow all the way through as it should.

Go back through the forms and see if it is flowing correctly now.

  1. Log out of your return
    1. Try one or more of the following:
      • Sign in using a different browser.
      • Sign in using a different device.
  2. Log back into your return.

I found this for how TurboTax handles excess SS with Multiple employers:  https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/credits-and-deductions/help/can-i-get-a-refund-for-excess-social-s....

Excess social security and Medicare claim

Medicare doesn't have a limit like there is for Social security as a matter of fact for certain high wage taxpayers the Medicare tax can be more than 1.45% of medicare wages.

see if there is form 8959 in your return.

if so. on the form, the extra medicare tax you have to pay is calculated and you get credit for any excess medicare withheld
