The IRS just needs additional information from your to verify that you do or don't qualify for the Earn Income Tax Credit (EITC). The IRS letter clearly says you "MAY" be eligible for the credit. You received the letter because:
- You filed an original return with the IRS listing dependent children but did not claim the EITC.
- If the form the IRS sent you is CP09, it's to inform you that you may qualify for the credit and asks you to complete and return the enclosed EITC eligibility worksheet if you determine you are eligible for EITC. If the IRS confirms that you qualify for the EITC, a refund will be sent in six to eight weeks.
- If you determine that you do not qualify for the credit, no further action is needed.
