Question

Education tuition and fees deduction

I entered college expenses for both my son and daughter.  For some reason, form 8917 does not populate anything in Line 1, thereby nothing is flowing to schedule 1 line 21, meaning AGI does not get reduced.   Any idea why Line 1 is not populating?

Also, 8917 does not even show up as a form in the return on the left.

It could be that TurboTax is calculating one of the education credits instead. You can’t take both an education credit from Form 8863 and the tuition and fees deduction from this form for the same student for the same tax year.

Also, if your modified adjusted gross income is above $80,000 (or above $160,000 for joint filers), you can't qualify for the deduction

Thanks. From what I entered so far, I have not hit the AGI limits.  I also turned off the box to pick the credit instead and chose the one for the deduction.  It's just weird that the other lines of the form populate, but not line 1.
