In some states, your car registration fee includes a value tax based on the value of the car as your personal property. This part of the registration fee can be deducted as part of the “state and local taxes“ itemized deduction. The base registration fee, emissions test fees, and anything else that is not a value tax on the value of the car is not deductible.
so can I just skip this part of my taxes?
If you don’t have enough deductions to itemize anyway, or you live in a state that doesn’t charge that kind of tax on cars, you can skip it.
